IT'S ALL ABOUT YOU...

Climate change is a serious problem that affects us all. There is strong evidence that human emissions of greenhouse gases are also changing the world’s climate. The main greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide (CO2), produced when we burn fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas for energy.

  • According to 2005 figures the world’s population produces 60 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every day.
  • Of which the UK alone was responsible for 2%.
  • Over 40 % of carbon emissions in the UK come directly from what we do as individuals. This includes heating and using electricity in our homes and, of course, driving our vehicles.
  • Flights are the next biggest source of individuals’ carbon emissions.
  • Latest estimates suggest that the UK has a carbon footprint of 650 million tonnes of greenhouse gas. 27% of those emissions came from the energy we use to heat, light and power our homes.
  • Our transport emissions caused by passenger cars, buses, mopeds and motorcycles accounted for a further 15% of carbon emissions.

What is a carbon footprint?

Carbon FootprintA carbon footprint is the amount of greenhouse gas a country, business, product or individual is responsible for emitting.

So, if you divide the 650 million tonnes figure by the number of people who live here in the UK it is estimated the average carbon footprint is about 11 tonnes per person. To help you workout your own carbon footprint there are lots of on line calculators you can use. Why not take a look at the Act on CO2 calculator at: www.actonco2.direct.gov.uk/index.html

Did you know?

Sending one item through the
mail generates an average
of 26g of CO2. The amount
of energy required to power
a computer for one minute
produces 1.8g of CO2. Thus,
one hour’s use of a computer
produces 5 times as much
carbon as is produced by the
delivery of one letter.

Did you know?

At just 0.01kg of carbon per
letter per person per year, a
normal letter still represents
good carbon value, especially
relative to other forms of
communication; mobile-phone
chargers alone account for
between 35kg to 70kg of
carbon per person per year.
