The time to recycle…is now!

When we think of the environment it is likely that our thoughts turn towards recycling.

When we recycle, recyclable materials are reprocessed into new products, and as a result the amount of rubbish sent to landfill sites reduces. In this context it is important to remember that waste prevention and recycling are top of the Government’s agenda for the direct marketing sector. Joan Ruddock, Minister for Climate Change, Biodiversity and Waste recognises the good work being done by the DMA by saying...

“The direct marketing sector had begun to take up the challenge well before the Waste Strategy was published. By 2013 the agreement between the Direct Marketing Association and the Government on recycling could save the equivalent of 450,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. But there is still a long way to go to achieve the 70% recycling target in the agreement.”

No matter how large or small your organisation is, there is something you can do to make a
difference. The Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) have produced a 'Recycle
Now' logo which is suitable for use across the communication mix.

Recycle Now

These logos clearly demonstrate to the consumer that your material can and should be recycled after use. According to research (from recyclenowpartners) 65% of people in England now recognise the 'recycle now' logo. This is not surprising when you consider that a vast range of organisations…including major brands, retailers, local authorities and community groups are actively using the logos.

Ruddock also recognises that direct marketing is not the only or largest source of waste paper and that the Government is working with other users like the newspaper and magazine sectors. However, she goes on to say…

“The industry will need to make sure that it uses material that is recyclable and works with others to achieve greater recycling. One simple action the industry could take is to use the ‘Recycle Now’ logo on all mail. I would also like to see greater use of recycled material by the industry itself.”

We are pleased to see some ONEPOST clients are already including a ‘green’ message on their mailing piece.

The Dog's Trust

Includes messages on the outer envelope - relating to recycling the mailing pack, use of recycled paper and an opt out option.

As the largest dog welfare charity in the UK, we have a natural affinity with the concept of care, so we have now extended this into environmental care by including a simple recycling message on our mailing packs”

Serious Readers includes messages on the outer envelope - relating to recycling the mailing pack, use of recycled paper and an opt out option.

"The opt out option allows us to ensure we are targeting those people who want to receive our mailings, overcoming the perception of ‘junk mail’ and keeping our database as up-to-date as possible”
